Transforming a barren yard into an outdoor home that suits your lifestyle needs can increase the value of your property and extend your living space.  It can also be very challenging to design and build, particularly in New England’s diverse landscape.

Whether you are seeking a tranquil garden with a path and fountains to reflect upon your day, or an in ground trampoline and patio to entertain family and friends, Maltby and Company can help you achieve your landscape and hardscape needs. Our professional (arborists?) will work with you directly or your Landscape Architect to design and build your ideal outdoor living space.

Planting & Transplanting Trees & Shrubs
Creating an outdoor home with beautiful, healthy trees and shrubs is the result of careful planning.  Our certified arborists will work with you or your Landscape Architect to evaluate your property’s soil type, sunlight, water, temperature and a host of other items to insure the success of your plantings.  Based on this evaluation, we will help recommend the appropriate trees and shrubs, planting methods and long-term care solutions for a healthy, beautiful outdoor home.

Transplanting Large Trees & Shrubs
Transplanting mature trees and shrubs from one location to another can add value to your property by creating different focal points, views and living space.  Large trees and shrubs might also require transplanting if they interfere with new construction, telephone wires, existing structures or plantings.  Our certified arborists and landscapers will take proper care of your plant’s route system during excavation to reduce stress and ensure that your transplanted trees and shrubs will thrive in their new location.

Air Spading
When the soil around your trees and shrubs gets compact it acts like concrete, and prevents air and water from reaching their roots.  Plantings that have grown too close to driveways and other hard surfaces can also suffer from insufficient air and water.  Air spading uses high pressure air to loosen the soil around roots without damaging the root system.  Air spading is also the preferred method for excavating root collars and transplanting bare root trees since it preserves 90% - 100% of the plant’s root system.  Lastly, air spading the roots of an older tree can help expose problems such as improper root systems and girdling; to make proper corrections that promote health and prolong the tree’s life.

Drainage Solutions
The ground in your outdoor home is naturally uneven and may cause water to puddle or flow away from a desirable planting area. Driveways can also cause puddle if they do not have proper drainage.  Our licensed masons can help eliminate puddles and redirect water flow by installing dry wells, corrugated pipes and other solutions to ensure proper drainage in your outdoor home

Hardscape/Masonry
Hardscape refers to those elements in the landscape other than flowers, ground cover, plants and trees.  Common hardscape features include: fences, landscape lighting, walls, patios, walks and driveways. We can create and install any particular pattern to beautify your hardscape using all types of materials including: cobblestones, bricks, bluestone, and fieldstone to create walkways, patios, stonewall, and driveways.  We can also install retaining walls to protect your property from erosion.

Specialty Projects
Some of our more unique have included the installation of a statue for the Peabody Museum in Cambridge and the installation of an in-ground trampoline for a playground.
